Development in Owen’s Formulation of Christ’s Priesthood

The first occurrence of Christ’s priesthood is found in Owen’s earliest publication of 1642, A Display of Arminianism.1 In this treatise, he sought to address the main tenets of Arminian theology. On the question of the extent and efficacy of Christ’s death, Owen understood the Arminians to have argued for an atonement that is universal in extent and that is potentially efficacious, a position that is diametrically opposed to his particularistic and actualistic view of the atonement. The priesthood of Christ was employed by Owen to counter the Arminian position in the following way:
